How to avoid ‘Brexit Regret’ type experience with when choosing new storage vendors

Great Britain voted at the end of June to end its 40 year relationship with Europe. What has come out in the past week or so is that the many voters didn’t fully understand what they were voting for and what it meant for the country and Europe as a whole. Some events have happened in the last two weeks which have influenced many to have a change of heart.  If they had known two weeks ago, what they know now they would have made a different decision, frequently referred as “Brexit Regret”.  

We experience similar emotions with IT buyers.  What they think they have bought and the reality are not the same thing. If they had the power to look into the future and see what was actually going to happen it clearly would influence their decision. This is a cornerstone of what we do at Virtual Instruments with our Load DynamiX products. Let me give you an example. One of our customers was looking to reduce cost and complexity. Their supplier was not able (or willing) to move on spec or price so the customer decided to evaluate new and different platforms. They had learned about the Load DynamiX products at an event and decided to engage to see how their application workload would perform on the new platform before buying.  What happened next was illuminating with the knowledge we provided helping avoid a costly mistake and saving them a massive amount of money and hardship.

In addition to their existing environment two converged systems from different OEMs were evaluated. The most expensive and powerful new system lasted only twenty-five minutes before failing to perform. The engineers were called in and they reset the machine and re-spec’d it. It then lasted thirty minutes before failure. Had the customer gone ahead and bought the new platform by blindly trusting the vendor claims they would have had a disaster on their hands.

We have similar stories about organizations wanting to migrate to the Cloud. Before any move is made you should be able to fully characterize and understand how your application is performing, then you can set a spec and SLA with the cloud vendor rather than accepting what they suggest. This doesn’t mean that cloud hosting won’t work, but you should know up front if it’s right for your workloads.

Application workloads are all different and it is vital to test each of your primary workloads with vendor equipment before purchase.
